Thiruvananthapuram: Painter Surendran Nair has been awarded the 2022 Rajaravi Varma Award, the highest recognition of the Department of Culture. The award is for comprehensive contribution in the field of painting. The date of distribution of the award, which consists of three lakh rupees, a certificate and a plaque, will be announced later.

Writer and art curator Sadananda Menon was the chairman and painters Neelima Shaikh, Shibu Natesan, K.M. Madhusudanan, Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy Secretary N. Balamuralikrishnan and a committee with members selected the awardee. To be highly influential among contemporaries and recognized nationally and internationally
