Ralpin returns to break-even but still suffered from the pandemic

The operator Ralpin returned to equilibrium in 2021, thanks to new lost fund aid from the Confederation of 2.8 million francs as well as the dissolution of reserves for more than 2 million. But the Covid-19 still hurt the company at the start of 2022.

‘Due to a Covid decree from the Italian government, no European test certificate might be established in the terminals between January and March’, deplores the operator of the ‘rolling motorway’ (Rola) between Freiburg and -Brisgau (D) and Novara (I) in a statement on Monday.

The introduction in mid-October of this possibility of acquiring tests had in particular made it possible to raise the bar at the end of 2021.

The Olten firm estimates that it had to give up transporting some 5,600 trucks over the first three months of the year. However, the lifting of sanitary measures allowed the company to regain momentum and to generate positive results from April.

Owned by BLS, Hupac and SBB, Ralpin transported nearly 70,000 heavy goods vehicles between Germany and Italy in 2021, compared to just over 56,000 in 2020.
