Ram Attack in Hamoir: A Cautionary Tale in an Eco-Grazing Area

In Hamoir, in the province of Liège, a ram caused damage. He injured a lady in an eco-grazing area. Walkers and animals cohabit there, normally without problem. What happened?

This eco-grazing area looks like an ideal picnic spot. There is a magnificent panorama over the Ourthe valley and around thirty peaceful, even fearful sheep. The catch: there is also an Aries who can be protective. A few days ago, he attacked a grandmother, knocked her to the ground and headbutted her.

Accompanied by her two grandchildren, she remained for an hour and a half standing on a table, located on the spot, while waiting for help. She escaped with injuries to her ribs and legs and a three-week incapacity for work. “I can’t tolerate this stuff“, gets angry Patrick Lecerf, mayor of the town.

On the site for a good cause

Ewes are present on the premises to eliminate weeds and guarantee biodiversity. The farmer, and owner of the herd, is remunerated for this service. If he puts a ram with the sheep, it is so that they reproduce. For the mayor, this is not a sufficient reason to maintain the situation as it is: “I don’t think it’s smart to make people take risks for such an interesting biodiversity project.”

The nature and forest division that manages the site explains: “The reserve is not the only one to include areas accessible to the public in conjunction with pastures. In more than 10 years with the same breeder, this is the first time such an incident has been reported. Consideration is being given to avoid any such accident in the future.

As for the ram, he is now in solitary confinement in a meadow.
