A must-have in the freezer for most Germans: frozen pizza. An expert tested offers from Aldi, Rewe and Co. and chose a winner.
Munich/Dortmund – According to the industry association “Deutsches Frozen Food Institute” (dti), every German eats an average of 13 frozen pizzas a year. This information relates to the Corona year 2020. In the following years, sales of this frozen product in Germany continued to increase – almost 400 thousand tons were consumed in 2022. But which manufacturer makes the pizzas taste best?
Frozen pizza from Rewe, Aldi and Dr. Oetker in the test – the results at a glance
The ZDF took a closer look at the classics from the refrigerated section, reports Merkur.de. Von fine bis Microwave currywurst: The magazine for business and consumers “Wiso” regularly tests food. Now it’s the turn of salami frozen pizzas.
Cheap and expensive variants from different manufacturers were compared with each other. Is the higher price of about one euro per 100 grams of branded pizzas à la Dr. Oetker, Wagner and Denns or can 30-cent alternatives to the Rewe, Aldi and Kaufland own brands keep up? Expert selects clear winner: This is the best frozen pizza
These results show that frozen pizza is not just frozen pizza. Clear differences can be seen, especially with regard to the salami quality and taste. For comparison: also Eco-Test has tested various frozen pizzas.
In addition to laboratory tests, the 2021 as Pizza World Champion awarded restaurateur Francesco Ialazzo asked for his expert opinion. He invited 14 guests to the taste test – the results are shown in the table overview. He himself has previously expressed his own opinion: His winner is the same as that of his guests: “The oven freshness” is most reminiscent of his passion – the fluffy Pizza Napoletana with a crispy crust.

Pizza in the test: two clear losers – there are brands in the supermarket
The pizza expert took a closer look at the lists of ingredients for all frozen pizzas and criticized: they contain various preservatives, almost all test products are covered with a cheese mix instead of regional mozzarella and the pizzas from the Rewe and Aldi supermarkets are covered with tomato puree instead of the traditional sauce. Frozen pizzas are nowhere near as good as traditional ones good Italian restaurant amazed.
The dough was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The salami was well seasoned.
Nevertheless: The frozen version of Dr. Oetker did well in the test. Apart from the fat content, “Die Ofenfrische” proved to be the winner in the three categories. The inexpensive pizzas from Rewe and Aldi, on the other hand, performed poorly, especially in terms of salami quality – so spending a little more money can be worthwhile.
