In Spain, the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (Anecpla) is sounding the alarm about the rapid spread of the tiger mosquito. High temperatures are favoring its expansion and experts are calling for increased vigilance and tighter control measures.

The south of France is invaded by tiger mosquitoes. The Aedes albopictus extends its presence throughout France but also increases its population. This problem also concerns its Spanish neighbour. The spread of the insect is spreading at full speed due to the particularly high temperatures on the Iberian Peninsula.

This mosquito, vector of diseases such as Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya, shows no signs of slowing its expansion. The National Association of Environmental Health Companies (Anecpla) is sounding the alarm and calling for stricter control measures to contain this threat, reports the Spanish daily Nius Diaro.

In a press release, Anecpla indicates “qs the presence of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Spain had reached a point of no return and that its extinction was impossible, the detection in galice of this vector transmitting serious diseases such as Dengue, Zika or Chikungunya, among others, confronts us with a new scenario, namely that its expansion “can only continue to grow until it colonizes the national territory“.

According to the association, factors such as globalization and climate change favor the spread of the tiger mosquito. Spain being an important global transit point in Europe.

This was explained by its general manager, Jorge Galván, who also warned that “Spain is the gateway for other species of mosquitoes and other invasive species, with the public health risks that this entails.

Anecpla insists on the activation of alert systems by public bodies to coordinate efforts to combat this growing threat.
