Rapid Support Forces Seize Wad Medani: The Unfolding Crisis in Sudan

2023-12-21 18:19:00

With the capture of the capital of Gezira province, Wad Medani, by the militia group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the violent conflict in Sudan has entered a new phase. The fall of the provincial town represents an embarrassing defeat for the Sudanese armed forces led by the head of state, General Abdelfattah al-Burhan, which might ultimately lead to the total collapse of the troubled state. The RSF militia, which is notorious for its brutal treatment of the population and has no experience in governing or administering a community, controls large parts of the capital Khartoum as well as other areas of the country. Given the possible collapse of the army, al-Burhan’s overthrow or resignation is no longer ruled out.
