The animal likely died several days ago, but is still in good condition. It is very rare for this type of animal to reach Belgium. Researchers will conduct an autopsy after the new year.

The average dolphin can be up to 2.5 meters long. The animal in question measures two meters and weighs 80 kilograms. “It’s very rare for this type of animal to arrive here, but with the strong and persistent westerly winds, all kinds of things have drifted from the English Channel,” explains Jan Haelters. This species mainly comes from the Bay of Biscay in France.

The animal was recovered on Friday and is currently being kept in a freezer. “After the holidays, in January or February, an autopsy will be carried out. We will then be able to look for the cause of death and examine the contents of the stomach. We hope to learn more about this species and we also want to try to preserve the skeleton of the animal.”
