A medical team in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Qatif Central Hospital in the Eastern Province succeeded in performing a rare surgery on a 5-day-old newborn girl (premature), weighing 1.7 kilograms.

The child was received as an emergency from Al-Khafji General Hospital, and it was decided to prepare the operating room immediately to perform the surgery, which took approximately 3 hours.

The medical team was able to close the fistula and connect the esophagus first, and announced the success of the operation for the child and the stability of her condition. She was transferred to the intensive care unit for premature babies to complete the rest of the prescribed treatment plan until her discharge from the hospital.

Esophageal atresia is a congenital physical defect represented by the failure of the esophagus to develop properly, where the upper and lower parts or one of them is blocked, with its direct connection to the trachea, and its causes are not fully clear, but it is likely to be mainly due to genetic mutations, and its prevalence rate is 1 for every 4,000 births.
