A strong solar storm is hitting Earth today.
The heavy cloud cover could prevent a sighting.
Thanks to a strong solar flare, northern lights sightings are also possible in Switzerland on Friday. The US Space Weather Prediction Center expects a G3 geomagnetic storm to hit Earth on December 1st. The storm could even be so strong that it could cause problems with satellite navigation.
Heavy cloud cover probably throws a spanner in the works
«A direct hit! The impressive solar storm is expected to hit Earth at midday on December 1st,” writes Nasa expert Tamitha Skow on X. A look to the north was particularly worthwhile in the morning hours. But with a bit of luck you can still see the northern lights on Friday evening.
However, the chances in Switzerland are currently reduced due to the heavy cloud cover. A cloud cover is currently stretching across almost the entire country. A lot of cloudiness is also expected in the evening. A lot of precipitation can be expected, especially in the east and the Alps.
Not the first opportunity this year
Ideally, you should observe the northern lights far away from artificial light sources: “You should not stand under the nearest street lamp, but as far away from the city as possible,” advises Carolin Liefke from the Association of Star Friends in the event that the northern lights can be seen. You also need a clear view of the northern horizon.
The Northern Lights have already been observed twice in Switzerland this year. On September 25th there were perfect conditions for Northern Lights sightings in Switzerland. A few days later there were several sightings again.
