The trigger is a strong solar storm. Northern lights occur when electrically charged particles from the solar wind excite oxygen and nitrogen atoms, which release energy in the red, green or violet color spectrums.
Actually, the northern lights can only be seen in the north, thousands of kilometers away. But as the Austrian meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann explained to the news portal “Heute”, in this case it was the northern lights that are currently visible as far as the Alps.
Anyone who wanted to see the spectacular natural event needed a clear view to the north and the darkest possible environment on Monday night.
