A rare and violent tornado tore through the southwestern French village of Pomas, injuring 39 people, flattening homes, and leaving a trail of structural devastation in the Aude department. Residents recounted harrowing moments of survival as the vortex bore down on residential streets. A local resident described the ordeal, stating, It felt as though death itself was falling upon us.
The family managed to pile into their car, which was shaken by the tornado before they accelerated to safety in what she called a pure act of survival instinct.
Another local resident named Chantal shared a similar nightmare with French broadcasters, noting, I heard this massive noise… then I saw everything flying around in the air and my roof collapsed over my head. I’ve got no house left, that’s for sure… I was really scared. I thought that’s it, this my final hour.
Among the 15 people hospitalized was a pregnant woman injured when her home collapsed.

The human toll was compounded by widespread infrastructure failures across the region. Local sub-prefect Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemarchand confirmed that approximately 2,800 homes across 10 villages lost power. While tornadoes are not entirely unheard of in France—with the country experiencing several dozen tornadoes per year on average—this particular outbreak highlights the volatile transition from summer heatwaves to thunderstorms. As emergency services adapt to meteorological phenomena, the immediate priority for Pomas remains housing the displaced and rebuilding a community altered in a matter of terrifying minutes.
