Completing his temporary extradition process from Mexico, Raúl Escobar Poblete -known as the “Commander Emilio”-, arrived in Chile on Thursday night to be tried as perpetrator of the murder -in 1991- of the senator and founder of the UDI, Jaime Guzman.
The former player arrived at around 9:20 p.m. on a flight from the Air Force (Fach) and escorted by the Investigative Police (PDI) to Iquique, half an hour later -after refueling- continue the trip to Santiago. During the period in which the ex-striker kept the woman kidnapped, she suffered the amputation of one of her fingers. According to the case history, for 20 years Raúl Escobar -who was wanted by Interpol- lived in Mexico under that false name, leading a network of kidnappers who were dedicated to charging large sums of money in dollars for the releases. The extradition process had started in 2018, in coordination with the Mexican justice system.
As agreed, once the process in Chile is over, the former opponent must return to Mexico to serve the remaining sentence for kidnapping. About the details, the undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, explained that “Commander Emilio” “It will be presented to a court that will take a statement and make decisions once notified of its prosecution. For his part, Government Spokesperson, Jaime Bellolio, He affirmed from La Moneda that the arrival of the ex-oppositionist “is to comply with a judicial order issued by the Supreme Court and thanks to the work that has been done in the extradition treaty by the Chilean and Mexican foreign ministries. But we are not talking about just any murderer, we are talking about a person who later became a torturer, kidnapper and mutilator of women. Crimes that he also committed with his friend, Ricardo Palma Salamanca, another torturer and murderer. We are talking about people who have made a career of crimes, murders, torture, mutilations, kidnappings in their lives ”.
Bellolio added that “this is one more step towards justice, this person has never sympathized in front of Justice and here there is a temporary delivery by Mexico ”. UDI values extradition
While, from the UDI they issued a statement in which they stated: “We appreciate that the government of Mexico has granted the extradition of Escobar Poblete so that he can face Chilean justice. Mr. Escobar Poblete is a dangerous criminal, a terrorist who committed an attack against democracy in Chile by being the material author of the murder of Senator Jaime Guzmán and who in recent years even committed crimes of torture and kidnapping ”.
They added that “Both the UDI and the family of Senator Guzmán have waited more than 30 years so that this crime does not go unpunished and we consider this to be a very relevant milestone for justice to be finally done ”.
