“Re-Islamizing Turkey: The Promise of a Muslim Democracy under Erdogan’s Autocratic Rule”

He said he wanted to re-Islamize his country, but in a way that respects freedoms and democracy. His promise was, somewhere, to become a “Muslim democrat”, in the same way as the “Christian democrats” have existed for decades.

Twenty years after his accession to power in Turkey, first as Prime Minister, then as President, finally as President with extended powers who decides almost everything almost alone and yawns fter all those who express critical thinking towards his regime (political opponents, media, etc.), Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s autocratic game is crystalline. It will not prevent him from advancing, more comfortably than expected, towards a new electoral victory this Sunday, during an unprecedented second round for 60 million Turks.

In truth, the lead obtained in the first round by Erdogan (+4.5%), the rallying of the nationalist Ogan to his cause, the less brilliant than expected performance of Kiliçdaroglu in the first round and finally the sanction vote less strong than expected against the leader of the AKP following the earthquakes that have bruised the country: all these elements suggest that a defeat for Erdogan on Sunday would be a huge surprise.
