Reaching the finish line healthy was half the battle in Cortina

The Speedtriple recorded more falls and rides than on any previous weekend in the Ski World Cup. Cornelia Hütter also had to experience this, while Stephanie Venier and Lara Gut-Behrami found the right dosage. It remains unclear when Mikaela Shiffrin, who fortunately is only slightly injured, will be able to return.

The main thing is to reach the finish line healthy – this has hardly been true on any other Ski World Cup race weekend before as it was on the two downhill runs and the final Super G in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Mikaela Shiffrin, Federica Brignone, Corinne Suter or Sabrina Maier on Friday, Isabella Wright, Joana Hählen or Kira Weidle on Saturday, Ariane Rädler, Kajsa Vickhoff Lie or Cornelia Hütter on Sunday: The list of fallen and canceled athletes is far from complete. Some had a harder time, most were lucky in misfortune and the few who were able to swing without any problems were right at the top.

Venier surprises himself

From an Austrian perspective, above all Stephanie Venier. The Tyrolean, downhill winner on Friday, was only beaten by Lara Gut-Behrami in the Super G. When she crossed the finish line, she also shook her head after what felt like a slow ride before she had to correct her analysis: “It obviously wasn’t so stupid to take an extra curve after all.” Gut-Behrami saw it similarly, winning with a measured ride after a “weird weekend”: “I didn’t want to take any risks after all the crashes, I just tried to ride cleanly and safely.” A tactic that normally doesn’t win anything was the means to victory this time.
