Recap of Tuesday’s NHL Action: Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, and More

2023-11-29 02:58:00

Florida Panthers players returned to the locker room convinced they had collected the two points in Toronto, but they had to turn back to finally see the Maple Leafs sign a 2-1 shootout victory on Tuesday.

During the session, Auston Matthews served a nice fake to Anthony Stolarz by slipping the disc between his pads. Sam Reinhart tied the score with a good shot and moments later, Evan Rodrigues beat Joseph Woll which at that point started the celebrations for Florida.

Except that the officials revised the goal and pointed out that the Panthers player pushed the puck twice in motion after it hit the goalie which voided the goal.

Noah Gregor then started for the Leafs and made the ropes vibrate. The Panthers players who had withdrawn to the locker room returned to their team’s bench, but for a short time, because Nick Cousins was not able to extend the session and the Leafs this time left with their arms in the air.

After a game with 167 penalty minutes the day before against the Senators, the Panthers were again involved in altercations. Matthew Tkachuk was expected in Toronto when he received a double-check from Max Domi. The latter attacked Sam Bennett. The two players found themselves on the ice a little later and they threw down the gloves.

Kevin Stenlund and Gregor scored during regulation time for each team. The Leafs were unable to finish the job before overtime despite a four-minute penalty on Jonah Gadjovich for high-sticking with just over three minutes left in the third period. The Leafs were also punished before the siren for too many men on the ice.

Woll shined in the victory for the Leafs with 38 saves while Stolarz stopped 31 pucks.

In the first period of this game, Mitch Marner received a puck in the face and temporarily left the locker room to return with a grill. Defenseman Mark Giordano left the Leafs game with an upper body injury.

Wild wins first game under Hynes

Joel Eriksson Ek, Frédérick Gaudreau and Matthew Boldy hit the target, allowing John Hynes to savor the victory in his first game behind the Minnesota Wild bench, 3 to 1 over the St. Louis Blues.

Minnesota therefore ends a seven-game winless slide the day after the dismissal of head coach Dean Evason and his assistant Bob Woods.

Filip Gustavsson made 22 saves to record what was only his third victory in 12 starts.

In the case of Boldy, who beat Jordan Binnington on a breakaway in the third period, it was his first goal in eleven games since his return from injury. He hadn’t threaded the needle since October 14.

Gaudreau is also back from the infirmary; the Quebecer opened his account, in his tenth match of the campaign.

Colton Parayko was the only scorer for the Blues. His net tied the score 1-1, eight minutes after Eriksson Ek had opened the scoring.

McCarron helps Preds continue success

Michael McCarron scored two goals to help the Nashville Predators earn a 3-2 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It was Filip Forsberg who played the hero in overtime with a wrist shot while he was on a breakaway. An accidental collision between Ryan O’Reilly and Sidney Crosby at the Penguins blue line opened the way for Forsberg’s breakaway.

Coming back to McCarron, this is the third two-goal game of his NHL career. McCarron, who scored the first two goals of the game, also dropped the gloves in the second period.

Thus, the Predators continue their recent success with a sixth consecutive victory.

Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust scored the Penguins’ goals in the loss.

Juuse Saros did well in front of the Predators cage with 29 saves, while Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry allowed three goals on 26 shots.

McCarron put the Predators in the driver’s seat midway through the first period when he skillfully redirected a Tyson Barrie shot for his second goal of the season.

The former Canadian was on the ice at the end of the period, while the Predators were attacking with six players due to a delayed penalty. McCarron jumped on a loose puck in the slot and hit the target with a wrist shot to double his team’s lead.

The Penguins stopped their slide in the opening minutes of the middle period. After a great individual maneuver from Reilly Smith entering the zone, Malkin accepted his pass and scored his 10th goal of the season, thanks to an excellent wrist shot.

After scoring points, McCarron used his fists in the second period. Moments after Malkin’s goal, McCarron threw down the gloves against John Ludvig in a fight that will not go down in history.

Rust put the score on the scoresheet in the third period when his wrist shot from the top of the circles found its way past Saros, tying the score 2-2 and eventually sending the game into overtime.

Forsberg needed just 14 seconds to end the debate.

The Penguins will return to action on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Predators will face the Minnesota Wild.

Kochetkov guides the Canes to victory

Pyotr Kochetkov made 29 saves, Michael Bunting had a goal and an assist, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1.

Bunting earned a promotion to Sebastian Aho’s line due to a virus preventing Andrei Svechnikov from playing.

He took advantage of this opportunity by scoring the first goal of the match, against Carter Hart, in the eighth minute of play.

The Flyers responded with Travis Konecny, who scored his 12th goal, approaching mid-game.

Brendan Lemieux scored what would become the winning goal at 13:25 of the second period.

The rest of the match, however, was Kochetkov’s affair, elected first star of the match. The Russian goalkeeper won a second start in a row, after the victory against Columbus on Sunday.

Seth Jarvis beat Hart late in the third to increase the Canes’ lead, then Jesperi Kotkaniemi completed the scoring by scoring into an empty net.

Oettinger closes the door on the Jets

Jake Oettinger stopped 27 pucks for a shutout and the Dallas Stars defeated the Winnipeg Jets 2-0.

The Stars goalie was not busy in the first period with only five shots against his net. The Jets were more insistent during the other two engagements with 11 shots per period, without however finding a solution in front of Oettinger. It was Oettinger’s first shutout this season. He still signed a ninth victory in his 15th match.

Joe Pavelski gave the Texan team the lead during the middle period. In his office in front of Connor Hellebuyck’s cage, the striker only had to redirect Roope Hintz’s delivery into the back of the goal.

Tyler Seguin delivered the final blow with less than five minutes remaining in the final period. Mason Marchment showed up with his teammate on a two-on-one and served him a clever lift pass that Seguin sent behind the red line.

Hellebuyck gave up twice on only 21 shots during this clash.

The Hawks win despite the turmoil

Petr Mrazek blocked 33 shots and the Chicago Blackhawks scored twice in the first eleven minutes of play to defeat the Seattle Kraken 4-3.

The Hawks will therefore not have let the series of incidents involving their former teammate Corey Perry become a distraction, a few hours after the buyout of his contract.

Boris Katchouk and Jason Dickinson beat Philipp Grubauer in the first period, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead.

The Kraken’s response was quick, however, as Matty Beniers and Alex Wennberg struck back before the first intermission.

Once again in the second period, the Hawks scored twice in the first eleven minutes; goals from Tyler Johnson and Mackenzie Entwistle put the locals back in command by two goals, 4-2.

Tye Kartye brought Seattle within a Chicago net in the final period, but Mrazek was able to protect the fort, notably during a double numerical superiority by the Kraken.

Stamkos will blame himself

The Tampa Bay Lightning missed their share of chances and will leave Mullett Arena with a 3-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes.

Jonas Johansson was in net for the Lightning while Andrei Vasilevskiy enjoyed a day off after seeing action Monday in a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

Johansson was surprised in the first period by Michael Carcone who took a shot while turning and the puck found its way to the back of the goal. Travis Boyd added to the locals’ lead in the middle period following a nice move entering the zone and his shot got the best of the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Steven Stamkos then had a great opportunity to reduce the gap. He was forgotten to the right of Connor Ingram’s cage and Alex Barré-Boulet gave him the disc. The Lightning forward, however, was unable to send the puck into a gaping cage.

Tampa still came close with less than five minutes to go before retreating to the locker room. Brayden Point completed a nice play from Nikita Kucherov to make it 2-1.

However, Ingram stopped all 12 Lightning shots in the third period and finished his game with 30 saves.

Carcone put the finishing touch with his second goal of the game, beating Johansson on his way back to the net. The Lightning goaltender made 22 saves in the loss.
