Recapping the Latest NBA Games: Magic Losing Streak, Antetokounmpo’s Triple-Double, and More

2023-12-03 09:57:54

The last time the Magic lost? November 14, in Brooklyn (104-124). Back at the Barclays Center, Orlando wanted to continue the magic that took his team to second place in the Eastern Conference (14-6), two short lengths behind Boston, by recording a tenth victory in a row. This would have been a record in the history of the Florida franchise.

This will not be the case since the series was abruptly interrupted on Saturday evening (101-129), again against the Nets. Unlike their host, the Magic players had played the day before. Franz Wagner, who had chained two matches to 31 points, blunted, this time was better held, and more clumsy (20 points at 6 out of 16).

On the other side, Mikal Bridges got off to a flying start with 26 points in the first quarter alone (42 in the end at 12/20, with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 15/18 on free throws). That’s more than the entire Magic over this period won 43 to 22 by the Nets, setting the tone for a quiet evening for Brooklyn. Spencer Dinwiddie (22 points) and Cam Thomas (20) also stood out for a team with four wins in its last five outings.

Antetokounmpo in triple-double against Atlanta

After their defeat against Chicago, the Milwaukee Bucks reacted at home by passing 132 points to Atlanta’s sieve defense (132-121), overwhelmed despite two players with more than thirty points (Trae Young, 32 and 12 assists but cut of his teammates in money-time, DeJounte Murray, 30 units). Opposite, the tandem Giannis Antetokounmpo – Damian Lillard finished with a cumulative 14/26 shooting.

The Greek, double MVP of the season, finished with a triple-double (32 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, his 36th career, the first this season), while the former Portland gunslinger accumulated 25 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists. The locals made the difference by going 18 to 7 in the last five minutes.

The Hawks were the only ones to have won in Milwaukee so far this season, on October 30 (127-110). But the 2021 NBA champions were still getting used to it, without Kris Middleton (12 points Saturday). The Bucks remain tied with Orlando in second place in the East (14-6), and Atlanta in the play-in zone (10th, 9-10).

The number of points scored by Killian Hayes for Detroit, with also 6 assists in 33 minutes, during the Pistons’ (new) defeat – the 17th in a row – against Cleveland (101-110).

Indiana puts on a show

Even without its attacking leader Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana, the biggest scoring machine this season (128.8 points per game) delivered to Miami one of the best scores of the current year, passing 144 points (144- 129). It was one of those shows that the NBA has had the secret of in recent years at the heart of the regular season, a fascinating explosion of numbers (the Pacers shot 66% on shots, 50% on 3 points, or 16/32 ), mixture of pure offensive talent on one side, great defensive passivity in sequences on the other.

The NBA champion with Denver, Bruce Brown, totaled 30 points for the Pacers, former New Yorker Obi Toppin adding 22 units. The Indianapolis team got off to a bad start, however, scoring 9 out of 25 at the start of the second half. She finished the game with an improbable 47 out of 60, an unreal shooting percentage of 78%. On the Heat side, in the absence of Bam Adebayo (hip), Jimmy Butler finished with 33 points. Two days earlier, already in Miami, the scenario was the opposite, the Floridians having won 142 to 132 against Indiana.

In the last match of the evening, Chicago got the better of New Orleans (124-118) thanks to 31 points from Coby White, and followed up with a second success after five defeats in a row.
