Recognition of Midwives and Indigenous Rights in Health Law Amendments in San Luis Potosí

San Luis Potosí, SLP.- The deputies Members of the Health and Social Assistance Commission of the State Congress approved the Draft Opinion of the initiative that requires adding section XXVII to article 4 and reform articles, 59, 67 QUÁTER, and 67 SEXTIES of the Health Law of the State of San Luis Potosí, presented by Legislator Bernarda Reyes Hernández.

The objective is to recognize midwives with the definition of companions of pregnant women, in order to authorize their function as part of traditional medicine and an ancient practice that is common in indigenous communities and that is inheriting from generation to generation, said representative Yolanda Josefina Cepeda Echavarría, president of the legislative commission.

Besides, In the same opinion, it was approved to harmonize the name of the Xi’iuy ethnic group, to clearly incorporate it in the section of protection and care for traditional midwives, with a perspective of respect for human rights.

Legislator Cepeda Echavarría highlighted the initiative of Representative Bernarda Reyes and said that “as Huastecas we are always interested in working hand in hand with the indigenous peoples and on this occasion, we ruled on an initiative to unquestionably favor midwives in the Health Law. where their human rights, uses and customs are respected no matter what.”

“As we know, sometimes there are women who dedicate themselves to the care of our women who are in labor, who are often not respected in their human rights, due to their customs and that, today from the State Congress, we are standing in solidarity with the midwives who perform a function from many years ago, from centuries ago, where no matter what, they have to be respected under human rights.”

Likewise, at the meeting of the Health Commission, a point of agreement presented by representative Lidia Nallely Vargas Hernández was approved. to urge the Commerce Directorates of the 58 municipalities of the State of San Luis Potosí, so that, within their powers, they inform this Sovereignty if business closures have been carried out due to the illicit sale of tobacco products to minors or for its individual sale, so far this year.

“If so, please report how many businesses have been closed in this case and what measures have been implemented to prevent these actions.” Legislator Aranzazu Puente Bustindui stated that the call should also be to COEPRIS and other authorities involved in the review and issuance of permits for commercial activities.

The working meeting was attended by deputies Yolanda Cepeda Echavarría, Edgar Alejandro Anaya Escobedo, Ma Elena Ramírez Ramírez, Aranzazu Puente Bustindui and Emma Idalia Saldaña Guerrero.
