Dementia symptoms vary according to the part of the brain damaged and the type of dementia.
Common early symptoms are recognized as memory loss, difficulty doing familiar daily tasks, confusion, and mood changes.
Dr William Wong, Consultant General Practitioner at Fitzrovia Medical Clinic, said: “Symptoms of dementia can appear in many aspects of daily life, from how a person speaks to spatial awareness.”
When it comes to food and drink, people with more advanced dementia may have difficulty eating and drinking, according to the British newspaper Express.
He added: “An early sign of the disease is trying to eat spoiled food or things that are not food.”
There are no early signs of dementia that appear specifically in the morning, although confusion about space and time are symptoms that should be paid attention to.
William explained that if someone starts speaking in long, garbled sentences, this could also be an indicator of dementia.
Other common signs in speech include losing words or finding it difficult to form and speak certain words.
If someone is having trouble with daily tasks, that may be a sign as well.
“They may forget where they put their things or how to operate certain machines or how to do a simple task,” he explained.
Poor spatial skills are also a symptom of dementia, and someone may begin to have difficulty with judgment or directions when driving and parking.
In addition, people with dementia get confused very easily, so they may forget their way home or when driving or walking, and falling more than usual is also a symptom.
Dr. Wong noted that in more advanced dementia, feelings of disorientation can get worse when sunlight begins to fade.
He advised: “If someone is found to suffer from these symptoms regularly, a doctor should be consulted immediately.”
