Brisbane: A hat-trick is every bowler’s dream. Something that rarely happens in cricket. But take six wickets in an over, that’s two hat-tricks, and that too when the opposition has just five runs to win in the last over.

The local cricket league in Australia was the venue for the seemingly unbelievable incident. Gareth Morgan, who is also the captain of Mudgeeraba Nerang in the Gold Coast Premier League, entered the record book with a wonderful performance. Earlier, Morgan was the team’s top scorer with 39 runs off 38 balls.

Last month, Mudgeeraba Nerang and Surfers Paradise met in a 40 over match. Batting first, Mudgeeraba scored 178 runs and all were out. In reply, Surfers Paradise was 174 runs for the loss of four wickets in 39 overs. With six wickets in hand, just five runs to win in the last over.

If four runs are scored, the match will be tied. Gareth Morgan, who is also the Mudgeeraba hero, came to Panterian. Jake Garland, the opener who was standing at the crease with 65 runs off 60 balls on the very first ball, was caught and out. After that, the five stars who came to the crease were golden ducks. Conor Mathieson, Michael Curtin, Wade McDougall, Riley Eckersley and Brodie Phelan were dismissed in successive balls.

The last two were bowled by Morgan Clean. Later the score card of the match also went viral. Taking five wickets in an over is the best performance so far in professional cricket. Neil Wagner of Otago (New Zealand) in 2011, Al Amin Hussain for Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in 2013 and Abhimanyu Mithun for Karnataka in 2019 have taken five wickets in an over.
