Rome ∙ The country’s biggest drug bust on the island of Sicily in southern Italy. 5.3 tonnes of cocaine was seized from a secret compartment of a ship found off the southwest coast of Sicily. Officials said it has a market value of over 850 million Euros (Rs 7750.20 crore) and is the biggest drug bust in the country so far.
After becoming suspicious, the authorities were monitoring a merchant ship coming from South America and a fishing boat from the Calabrian coast of Italy. The Financial Police and prosecutors from the Anti-Mafia Directorate, who were found unloading several packages from a merchant ship and collecting them in a fishing boat in the Strait of Sicily at night, surrounded the area and arrested the gang.
A subsequent search revealed a large stash of drugs in a secret room below the ship’s deck. The boat was impounded and the five people on board were arrested. Those arrested are from Tunisia, Italy, Albania and France.
