Recruiting Candidates from Civil Society: Impact on Politics and the 2024 Elections

2024-01-15 19:14:00

To be “closer” to the population, certain parties tend to recruit candidates from civil society. The names of several personalities have been announced in recent weeks. What is really in the interest of the parties? Is there not a risk of disappointment in the long term?

“I wasn’t expected here at all and it’s true that for me too, it’s still a nice surprise.” Julie Taton is the latest surprise candidate propelled onto the electoral lists. The former presenter will occupy second place on the federal list of the MR in Hainaut.

Several of them have recently announced their commitment to politics with a view to the next elections: the former investigating judge Michel Claise for DéFI, or the epidemiologist Yves Coppieters who joined the Engagés.

“From the moment opinion polls indicate extremely close scores, every percent will count and bringing in a well-known personality can help make the difference. On the other hand, for a number of years, we have been witnessing a phenomenon of crisis of democracy with a strong expectation of renewal of the political offer”, analyzes the political scientist Pierre Vercauteren.

“We are in a democracy”

Like Marc Wilmots, elected senator in 2003, these personalities entered politics without any experience. Often well positioned on the lists, they have a real chance of being elected, with more or less room for maneuver.

“In Belgium, we are in a party democracy, it is the party presidents who decide everything so we can no longer be a free electron as we were in our previous function. We are obliged to respect party lines and often , there is a bit of disappointment among these vocal traps who serve on the electoral lists, but who are ultimately tied hand and foot politically,” explains Martin Buxant, political specialist.

Although the arrival of these new recruits sometimes raises eyebrows within the parties, the final choice always rests with the voter.

Follow the first major political meeting of the electoral campaign: “6 Presidents facing the Belgians” with Christophe Deborsu and Martin Buxant. See you on RTL-TVI and RTL Play this Tuesday, from 9:25 p.m. This will be directly followed by a debriefing with Caroline Fontenoy and our political analysts.
