It is not yet clear who will get the coveted cockpit next to Max Verstappen in 2025. Red Bull is still looking for the ideal candidate in Formula 1. A decision should not be made until the summer break.
A Formula 1 driver is now getting into position for the Red Bull cockpit. We’re talking about Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese hopes to be able to move up in the Red Bull cosmos next season and drive for the sister team.
Formula 1: Tsunoda also convinces Red Bull
He comes from the Red Bull factory, took the classic route via the formula series and finally ended up at AlphaTauri (today: Racing Bulls) in 2021. He is now in his fourth year in Formula 1 and the next step is now due – and that usually means: switching to Red Bull.

Until now, the Japanese weren’t confident enough to take the step, but in 2024 the 23-year-old finally seems to reach the desired level. In Australia he finished seventh and at the home GP in Japan he was tenth.
Peter Bayer, CEO of the Racing Bulls, was full of praise on Sky after the Japan race: “It has been on a constant upward trend for six months. He is incredibly focused and concentrated and is physically one step further ahead. He is strong and persistent and has taken a step forward mentally. He has grown from a teenager to an adult. He drives incredibly focused and is a joy.”
And also Red Bull chief advisor Dr. Helmut Marko praised the Japanese: “There are four races and Yuki got the car into Q3 three times. It is constant and the mistakes are a thing of the past. His lack of control on the radio is also gone. He’s really blossomed, but it’s April and we still have a lot of races left.”
“It will be interesting for other teams”
What will happen next for him in the future is not yet clear. The trend is currently clearly pointing upwards – and the Racing Bulls know what that means: “He will be interesting for other teams and Red Bull is also watching very closely to see what happens next with him,” said Bayer.
