The International Committee of the Red Cross in Libya announced that it did not direct the population to be evacuated from the city of Derna, noting that the spread of corpses does not directly threaten public health.

On Saturday, the Red Cross said in a statement: We did not order any evacuation from Derna. We confirm that corpses do not lead to the risk of the spread of epidemics.”

We are focusing on helping our partner, the Libyan Red Crescent, to help the residents of Derna and other affected areas.

An investigation was opened into the collapse of the Wadi Derna dams

The authorities in eastern Libya continue to rescue survivors from the floods that swept through Derna last Sunday, amid expectations that the city could be evacuated in anticipation of the spread of epidemics and the spread of corpses.

Investigation into the collapse of the two dams

Meanwhile, the Libyan authorities opened an investigation into the collapse of two dams that caused a devastating torrent in coastal Derna, while rescue teams searched for bodies on Saturday, about a week after more than 11,000 people were killed as a result of Hurricane Daniel.

Bodies of Derna victims were recovered dozens of kilometers away

Heavy rains caused by Mediterranean storm “Daniel” caused deadly floods and torrential rains in eastern Libya last weekend. Two dams were flooded, sending water flowing several meters high through central Derna, destroying entire neighborhoods and sweeping people into the sea.
