The HM Faculty of Health Sciences of the Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) has held the day titled ‘Admission Test in Medicine. Something more than grades?’ During it, the debate was opened on the need for a new model of access to the Medicine Degree. However, today, this is mainly produced through academic assessment, both in public and private universities. Thus, the day has passed with a series of intense debates on how to define this new access model to the Degree in Medicine with values exogenous to academics. Among others, so that the vocation, the ability to communicate and listen are taken into account, with the aim of not losing even a possible medical future. “The selection processes must be balanced between qualifications and certain attributes of the candidates such as vocation, maturity, empathy, values, communication and listening skills, reasoning, initiative or leadership. Admission processes must be objective and transparent,” said Alicia de la Cuerda, vice dean of the HM Faculty of Health Sciences at UCJC.
Proposals for access to the Medicine Degree
Therefore, these experts are betting that the personal profile of future doctors has greater weight. In this way, they expressed several proposals for change in access to the Medicine Degree, such as the combination of the assessment of academic knowledge and the psychosocial profile. All of this with the aim of improving and adding value to the current tests carried out for this type of profession. This new model could represent a possible solution to the shortage of doctors that Spanish society faces and would greatly improve the deficiencies and needs demanded by society and by these professionals. This day has also represented a first approach towards the change of model, in which psychotechnical tests and directed interviews, together with academics, will promote a new admission model that is objective, transparent and on equal terms for all candidates.
