I was 14 when I saw Remo (17) for the first time at the Winterthur train station. His colleague came to me and asked me for my number because he didn’t dare. We then wrote a lot on MSN and met pretty quickly. We got together just as quickly – it was both of our first relationships. However, things were already in crisis at the beginning because we were both very impulsive teenagers. We often clashed and argued a lot. It was a real love-hate relationship.
The relationship didn’t last long and I ended it after just a few months. I still had feelings for him, but I knew it just wouldn’t work. We wrote every now and then, but nothing more. Both were taken again quite quickly. My relationship lasted for nine years. Although Remo was no longer an issue and we had no contact, I still always had him in the back of my mind.
“You can live with me”
At some point my relationship fell apart and at that point I opened a Facebook profile. After a few hours Remo wrote to me, he was the very first. I was shaking because I was so nervous when I saw his name and photo. We wrote back and forth and quickly it was the same as before. Of course I was happy, but I was still in the middle of the separation phase. After a few days we met for coffee and as soon as we walked towards each other there was a spark, all the butterflies were back. At the meeting we talked for seven hours. I noticed that the feelings are still there. And he told me that he had been looking for me over the past few years but never found me.
After the lovely first meeting, we started dating. But it was difficult for me after my long-term relationship. Especially because I immediately fell in love with someone again. Of course it was hard and I was afraid that if I gave myself time to properly grieve he would leave me. But he said he would wait for me – but it was still a difficult phase for both of us. But we mastered it together because we simply belong together.
At that time I was in the middle of looking for an apartment. He just said: “You can live with me until you find something else.” In the end I stayed there and before we were really together, we already had a cat and an apartment together – we were all in from 0 to 100.
“Fate would have it that way”
We have now been together for three years and engaged for a year. When he asked me, it was immediately clear to me that I wanted to do that too, even though our first relationship was extreme – we didn’t fit together in personality at all. Today it is completely different. In the nine years we have grown separately, developed similarities and now have a very harmonious relationship in which we rarely argue.
I think it’s positive that we lost touch for those nine years because I think that if we had stayed together it would have fallen apart – so both of us have led different lives and now we know we’ve arrived. Fate wanted it that way and I am overjoyed that it happened that way.
