If you exercise a lot, you reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer. A doctor explains which type of sport is particularly effective.

Munich – “Exercise is the best medicine!” Everyone has probably already received this tip from the German Cancer Aid from a doctor in one way or another. If you do sports, you live healthier. And: Daily exercise reduces the risk of developing cancer. Other measures will help.

Cancer risk: Sport has a great preventive effect – just ten minutes a day is enough

Scientists estimate that six percent of all cancer cases in Germany can be avoided through sufficient physical activity German Cancer Aid. This applies in particular to:

colon cancer. This is the third most common type of tumor in Germany. Breast cancer. The preventive effect is particularly evident in women after menopause. Bladder cancer. Bladder carcinomas are malignant neoplasms of the urinary bladder. Esophageal cancer. Few people die from esophagus tumors in Germany. This is particularly common in women between the ages of 40 and 59. Kidney cancer. It is considered treacherous because it is often only symptomatic in the advanced stage. Stomach cancer. About 15,000 people develop gastric carcinoma in Germany every year.

The German Cancer Society also points out the preventive effect of sport. A Munich doctor has now explained how anti-tumor training must be designed in order to benefit most. “The studies show that the preventive effect of sport is around 25 percent. The risk of cancer therefore falls by an average of a quarter,” said Martin Halle Focus Online. He is the senior medical director of the chair and polyclinic for preventive and rehabilitative sports medicine at the medical faculty of the Technical University of Munich.

Using the example of colon cancer, the specialist in internal medicine explains that although nutrition – these foods can reduce the risk of cancer – has a major impact, physical training is “much more important” in prevention than a smoke-free life. It is ideal to stimulate muscles and bones for 20 minutes a day. The best way to do this is with strength and endurance training. Jogging is preferable to walking because “a certain intensity” is necessary, Halle explained.

Cancer prevention: Even ten minutes of intensive training a day is effective

But even those who cannot or do not want to invest so much time can successfully prevent cancer. According to Halle, a daily, ten-minute, intensive workout is already effective. The following exercises are particularly suitable:

Halle points out that the preventive effect already occurs with the first training session because it is immediate protective messenger substances, so-called myokines, to be formed. Additional workouts or units acted like “boosters against cancer”. (mt)
