Bicycle thefts down in Liège

The Liège Police Zone makes bicycle theft one of its priorities. The figures are falling: almost 40% less since the start of the year, and already 25 authors intercepted. “We have active surveillance at the management center with cameras focused in particular on places where bikes are regularly stolen” continues the divisional commissioner. “We also have investigators who deal with bicycle theft, and this is a priority since we want to participate in promoting the method of traveling by bicycle. We also give prevention advice on the ground.”

To find the owner of the bike more easily in the event of theft, Kim Alexandre, principal inspector and head of the prevention department, gives some advice: “You must keep the invoice. If you have a used bike that you buy, draw up an invoice with the identity of the person who sold it to you, so that if you are unfortunately sold a stolen bike, you have proof of having purchased it in good faith. Ideally, we also advise people to have their bike marked with an engraving directly on the frame with the national number. With this number, we know how to make the link between the bike and the person.”

Proof required to recover your bike

One of the bikes has already found its owner. Others can be collected at the police station, subject to proof of ownership. Photos of these bikes are available on the Facebook page of the Liège Police Zone.

Note that in the event of bicycle theft, a simplified online report is available on the Liège police website to file a complaint without traveling.
