In addition to the difficult living conditions faced by children from disadvantaged backgrounds, they are more subject to mockery and harassment from young people of their age. An unbearable reality to hear, which must push us to act to reduce inequalities.
The precariousness, it’s already difficult to live with in itself, but it’s even more so for children, when they have to face the gaze of their classmates, who are not always kind to the most disadvantaged. Vinciane Leroy, a psychologist from the Harassment Reference Center in La Louvière, testifies to this, through the story of a young girl she received for consultation, who had confided in her being made fun of by the kids in her class because of the clothes she wore. “You should know that she came from an ultra-precarious environment, with serious economic problems. She only had three pairs of pants, and unfortunately the class was able to identify this problem, and it was something that fueled this exclusion on the part of the group.” she explains.
A story deemed unacceptable by Fanny Jandrain, who for her part insists on the need to change mentalities, and to raise awareness among our children, to avoid reproducing this type of situation as much as possible. “It makes us angry to hear this kind of thing,” she confides.
We must reduce these inequalities between children and teach them to give to the most vulnerable, so that they are no longer embarrassed.
