A real flood of petitions for a referendum is waiting for signatures at Austria’s municipal offices: no fewer than seven initiatives are campaigning for votes. The referendum is apparently in vogue at the moment, although most of the suggestions from the population just disappear in some parliamentary drawer. Because referendums are not binding, no matter how many people have supported them. From 100,000 signatures, the initiatives must be dealt with in parliament. But nothing more.
