Refloating operations are still in progress and the incident is disrupting river traffic near Merelbeke. “The waterway is blocked in both directions. This means that no boat can pass,” explains Geert Weymeis of the agency responsible for managing waterways in Flanders (Flanders Waterweg). “This might last several days. A diving company will be there to coordinate the refloating of the barge.”

The latter was transporting gravel. It also contained an oil tank, Mr. Weymeis said. “It might have leaked, but it didn’t. So there’s no environmental damage.”
The Vlaamse Waterweg agency continues to monitor the refloating operations and hopes that river traffic can resume soon, because “this is an important waterway for boats coming from the north of France”.
