Work is planned to refurbish the area concerned, the Complementary Infrastructure Financing Company (Sofico) told Belga on Wednesday evening.

“A truck overturned while dumping its cargo. There is a risk of having to level the road because of the spilled fuel oil. The motorway could be closed between the border and the Dour exit in the direction of Mons until tomorrow” , indicated at the beginning of the evening Eric Thiébaut, mayor of Hensies on his Facebook page.

“The cleaning is not enough and the road remains slippery”, specified the Sofico with its partner the SPW Mobilité Infrastructure. “A micro-planing is planned to remove a very thin layer of road to improve grip and free up the left lane before rush hour Thursday morning. Speed will be limited to 50km/h.”

Other work is already planned for Friday morning. “The work will begin around 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m. with scraping and the laying of a new coating in the morning on the emergency lane and the right-hand lane. In the afternoon, it will be the turn of the left,” added Sofico.

Work is expected to be completed before rush hour Friday evening.

The incident caused major traffic congestion on Wednesday afternoon and a detour has been put in place.
