Tunja, June 27, 2023. (UACP). The Boyacá Secretary of Health, together with the Directorate of Health Promotion and Prevention and the Healthy Life and Non-Transmissible Conditions Dimension, carried out the Regional Course on Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer, in its 2023 version, in order to address current precautions, taking into account that these are the best strategy to reduce the burden of disease in the region and the country.

In coordination with the National Institute of Cancerology – INC, the course had the purpose of establishing a roadmap that allows the development of actions for the prevention and early detection of cancer, and also guarantees timely care.

According to the referent of the aforementioned Dimension, Martha Veira Andrade, in Boyacá, gastric and colon cancer, cervix, prostate, breast, leukemia and lymphomas are the most reported causes of this disease.

«By the year 2022, an increase in the incidence of breast cancer was reported in the municipalities of Tunja, Sogamoso, Duitama, Puerto Boyacá, Moniquirá, Paipa, Tibasosa and Miraflores, and of cervical cancer; the majority in women between 30 and 39 years of age,” said Veira.

Likewise, the Referent mentioned, “it is important to continue working, as a Department, in the consolidation of care with a preventive approach and early detection, as this will undoubtedly allow us to reduce the burden of disease, a better quality of life, and optimize the resources of the health system.”

For the Secretariat, when cancer is detected at an early stage, it is more likely that the response to treatments will be more effective. For this reason, he assures, it is necessary to continue betting on health education, the promotion of healthy habits, and the monitoring of a healthy life. These are some of the biggest current challenges in fighting preventable diseases.

The event was attended by more than one hundred doctors and nurses from the State social enterprises of the first levels of care, wanting to articulate the work for the health of the people of Boyacá.
