Regions get ready for the Caribbean Wave 2022 drill

This Thursday, the international exercise of the Caribbean Wave 2022 tsunami drill will be held in the states of Trujillo, Zulia and Miranda, on the Venezuelan coast.

The head of the Operational Zone for Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (Zoedan), César Fernández, reported that the state of Trujillo will participate this Thursday in the international simulation exercise Caribe Wave 2022, from the municipality of La Ceiba with around 600 people.

He mentioned that 22 officials from the regional Civil Protection and from the Miranda municipality will be activated, 15 firefighters, 58 workers from Bolipuerto La Ceiba, 50 members of the Bolivarian National Coastal Guard, 28 members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (Fanb), 12 workers from the Institute National Aquatic Spaces (Inea), 214 families from the La Ceiba parish and 80 people from the Barbarita de la Torre Educational Unit.

“This Thursday, March 10, is the annual international exercise for the Caribbean Wave 2022 tsunami warning drill, which will take place in 14 states of the country, specifically in the coastal and insular areas, and in our state Trujillo it will be in La Ceiba, on the coast with Lake Maracaibo; there are about 600 people who will be participating in this tsunami evacuation and response drill,” he said.

He recalled that the objective of this activity is to evaluate the plans and response time to an adverse event, not only of security and prevention officials but also of the population, he also highlighted the importance of being prepared for these natural situations.

“In this exercise, the activation mechanisms will also be evaluated, testing our operational capacity, effective communication, responses and, most importantly, risk mitigation,” he explained.

The also regional coordinator of Civil Protection and Disaster Administration indicated that “the cavalry” will leave from the state leadership with the equipment and personnel necessary to carry out this drill, which will take place from 10 in the morning.

“It should be noted that the exercise will be carried out in compliance with biosecurity measures against covid-19, in order to avoid contagion,” Fernández pointed out.

The commander of the Civil Protection zone in the state of Zulia, Ramón Mavárez, reported that they are ready to carry out the Caribbean Wave simulation exercise, which will be carried out from the El Milagro sector, specifically the Carbozulia headquarters and its workers.

“There we are going to do a small drill to get people on the strip and the safe route of the exercise.”

He indicated that from VEN 911 they will be carrying out the transmissions that correspond to the communication protocol. “Since it is an international exercise, when early warnings are activated, especially the guidelines, which are planned for this day.”

Mavárez stressed that the coast of Venezuela is the first impact zone, and thus it goes through all the coasts of Venezuela, «The waves measure from 1 to 3 meters high, threatening in the context of Lake Maracaibo, the effect produced within our Zulian region».

in Miranda

The Caribe Wave international event, which is held to raise awareness about possible tsunami occurrences, will be held on the Barlovento coast, specifically in the municipalities of Brion (Higuerote), Pedro Gual (Cúpira) and Páez (Río Chico), sources of Protection reported. Miranda State Civil.

They indicated that this exercise will consist of a simulation carried out in work tables. In an event such as a tsunami, PC Miranda would have to evict people from the areas that would be most affected.

This Thursday they will simulate a supposed earthquake of 8.0 degrees with an epicenter in the north of the Dominican Republic, specifically in Playa de los Muertos, which would generate the alarm in Venezuela with waves of two to three meters in height.

Prior to this simulation, the PC troops informed the inhabitants of the communities on how to carry out an eviction in the event of a tusnami alert. The participation of about 15 people in this event is estimated.

This event is held on the second Thursday of each year in several Caribbean countries at the initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
