Regulating Artificial Intelligence in Switzerland: Recommendations and Global Perspectives from Federal Councilor Albert Rösti

2023-11-12 01:55:45

Switzerland needs regulation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), believes Federal Councilor Albert Rösti in an interview broadcast on Sunday by NZZ am Sonntag. He also recommends the establishment of an appeal body.

His department, the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), will present an inventory to the Federal Council by mid-2024, specifies Mr. Rösti. But it is important not to hinder innovation in the field of AI, notes the Bernese.

The UDC minister considers it possible to adopt the rules of the European Union (EU). ‘But, frankly, this is a global issue,’ he notes, emphasizing that the UN might also play a role.

The risk of misinformation

Mr. Rösti participated last week in the United Kingdom at the first global summit on security linked to artificial intelligence. He stressed the need to exploit the opportunities offered by AI while adequately taking into account technical, geopolitical and societal risks.

All participants considered that the danger of disinformation was the greatest risk, declared the federal councilor on Sunday in the German-speaking newspaper. For the media, the search for truth becomes even more difficult, he adds. ‘We are currently discussing within the Federal Council how to address these challenges.’
