Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler (ÖVP) and NEOS politician Sepp Schellhorn are calling for stricter rules for reviews on online platforms. Both refer to the “Salzburger Nachrichten” in Italy, where Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè has announced that she will take action against anonymously written reviews and require platforms to use real names. Hotelier and politician Schellhorn wants to go even further.

He has been waging a years-long legal battle over the deletion of a comment on Tripadvisor, so far without success. The final instance is now before the Administrative Court – for 1.5 years now. Wolfram Proksch, Schellhorn’s legal representative in the case, said about the real name requirement: “You can also forge names.”

It would be necessary for users to “clearly identify” themselves on the platforms – for example with a cell phone or credit card number. In addition, the responsibility of the platforms must be established by guaranteeing that only those who were actually in the restaurant and hotel can evaluate. According to Proksch, this is already the case with Booking.com and Amazon.

State Secretary Kraus-Winkler told “SN”: “We will consult with the Italian associations and see how they regulate this.” At the meeting of EU tourism ministers in February, she wants to raise the issue at EU level.
