Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid hopes longtime offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy gets a chance to lead his own team in the future.
“Eric Bieniemy has done a tremendous job for us and, I believe, for the National Football League, too,” Reid told ESPN. “I hope he has an opportunity to go somewhere and do his thing where he can run the show and be Eric Bieniemy.”
The 53-year-old Bieniemy helped build one of the most prolific offenses in the league under Reid since taking on the role of offensive coordinator in 2018. He served as the team’s running backs coach from 2013-17.
In the second half of Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City scored touchdowns on their first three post-half drives. On the last play, the Chiefs scored the crucial field goal and went 38-35 to secure the win and their second title in four years.
Bieniemy said the offense didn’t perform as well as it needed to in the first 30 minutes of the game and she needed to support the defense better.
The Chiefs used more motions that seemed to fool the Eagles defenses and resulted in big gains and touchdowns for the offense.
“We saw something on the video and we knew we could take advantage of what they weren’t doing,” Bieniemy said.
The New Orleans native has been interviewed as head coach across the league in the past.
Most recently, he spoke to the Indianapolis Colts last month about their vacant head coaching position. He is also being considered for the position by several other teams, including the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders.
Meanwhile, Reid downplayed the thought of retiring after Sunday’s win.
