Books – Youssef Afifi:

An official source at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the image spread on social media of the statue of Champollion placing his foot on the head of an ancient Egyptian king, at a French university.

This came after the pioneers of social networking sites shared a picture of a statue showing the French archaeologist Champollion, placing one of his feet on a stone head resembling one of the pharaohs in front of the Sorbonne University in Paris.

The source told Masrawy that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, demanded more than once the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Egyptian Embassy in Paris to intervene immediately to remove this statue as it represents an insult to the ancient Egyptians and the Egyptian civilization.

The source stressed that sculpting a limestone statue of the French scientist Champollion in this way while he treads his feet on one of our Egyptian ancestors is completely unacceptable, and the concerned authorities in France must remove this statue.

He pointed out that Egypt appreciates the French scientist “Champollion”, who deciphered the hieroglyphic language on the Rosetta Stone in 1822, and evidence of this is that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is celebrating this September, the 200th anniversary of deciphering ancient Egyptian writing and the emergence of Egyptology, by launching a campaign A promotional campaign on its websites on various social media platforms, to highlight the most important and distinguished artifacts that were discovered within each of the Egyptian governorates, under the title “Learn a treasure in your governorate”.

In a related context, Egyptian archaeologists and experts expressed, today, Saturday, their outrage at the image spread on social media, which shows insulting one of the ancient Egyptian kings, calling on the relevant authorities in Egypt to take immediate action to remove the insulting drunkenness to Egypt, and to file a complaint against the French University. .
