The Release Radar is a monthly selection of single releases from the pop/rock/electronic sector made in Austria.

SOVIE – “Weightless” (SOVIE // Release 09/22/23)

A reverberated, triolic delay in the piano treble and soulful choral singing paint the title “Weightless”. Appropriately, the lead vocals of SOVIE in their first German single the feeling of letting themselves go. A subtle appeal to at least give the self-optimization trend of our constantly competitive society a break here and there.
The two-minute song is as relaxing as a whole meditation session, without being casual at any point.

Ben Clean – “Tell me everything is good” (BouncyBen // Release September 21, 2023)

Under the name of BEN CLEAN The two young, motivated musicians write (Benjamin Klien) and produce (Maxi Nagl) single after single in their teenage bedroom in order to throw them into the seemingly endless streaming ocean as bait. Hoping for a big catch, of course. In any case, you get a feel for the streaming world and feedback in the form of click numbers. “Tell me everything is good” stylistically fishes in indie waters and sings about the eternal dilemma of the seemingly incompatible basic needs for security and freedom.
Hear it live on Friday (September 29th) in the backdrop of Vienna.

Prohaska – “Stewardess” (schneckrec. // release 15.09)

Stereotypical role models from Hollywood films shape our everyday lives. Of course, it is easier to project an existing image than to “paint” a new one. But every generation redraws its heroes. And so the sexist and contemptuous images are gradually freed from people’s minds.
Die Band Prohaska With her current single, she not only decouples this image, but also the antiquated and sexist image of the “stewardess”, and moves it straight towards the present with an emphasis on the attributes of stress-resistant and confident. The sound is funky as usual

ANKATHIE KOI – “Baby Boy” (Faszinator Music // VÖ 08.09)

On September 8, Ankathie Koi released a new song titled “Baby Boy.” The song is about the sexual desire of a woman aged 40 and over and real life, in which there are wrinkles and gray hair, but more experience and self-confidence.

Celebrated in song Ankathie Koi the savoir vivre of a femme fatale and spans from St. Tropez to Vienna. “Sweet baby boy, come to Mama Koi. “Mamas toy is mamas joy” she sings playfully and remains vocally cool (in her opinion). It’s about female desire after 40, which suddenly becomes invisible to the public, if not consciously ignored, explains Koi. “In our society it is completely normal and not worth mentioning for guys to date younger women. But if Madonna If you have a younger partner, it’s actually in every newspaper. In my opinion that is really very absurd.” Usual eccentric uses Koi of 80s beats, pop elements and is reminiscent of Falco How Michael Jackson. She surrenders to her desires unabashedly and uninhibitedly and makes no secret of her desire for a young man. “I wanted in Baby Boy describe a late summer soft pornographic scene as poetically as possible. The song is peppered with little ambiguities and if you pay a little attention, you can’t miss the allusions.”says the singer. It is daring Viennese pop that is cheeky and cheerful and invites you to dance freely. Like a Venus floating up from her shell, she raises the song a whole tone in the final chorus. That sounds wonderfully cliché. “Bubi, I see everything, even when I’m not present”, says the Viennese-born woman in Denglish, pushing the boundaries of what society accepts. The single “Amour Fou” released this year is also about lust and sexual desire. Ankathie Koi is retreating to the studio for the coming months to finish her new album, which will be released at the end of April 2024.

Conclusion: A successful ode to desire, elegant and fun. A socially critical song that settles in your ears without paying rent and accompanies you while you get ready to go out. Make it very intense.

VALEH – „Want You“ (VÖ: 16.09.)

On September 22, the talented actress, singer and activist brought VALEH aka Valerie Huber releases her second single. With “WANT YOU” she takes the listener into rocky spheres and presents herself with an authentic and self-confident sound.

She is a young woman who wants to lose herself and who has a strong will to take the microphone as her own. What initially seems like a thoughtful Avril Lavigne song from the 2000s gives you an energy kick from the chorus at the latest and becomes a catchy tune that is bursting with power. The precise interplay of drums, casual guitar sound and VALEH´s voice the “I want you – shivers running down my body. I want to lose myself” sings, ignites emotions and leads to a grand finale. The main protagonists play drums and guitar and they know exactly – this song is made for the big stages. This pop-rock single with a catchy melody is powerful and seductive, cool and rocking. The song is about knowing what you want, about clarity and self-determination, is a statement from the 27-year-old. What VALEH She knows that she wants to be heard clearly. Because in this track nothing was left to chance with skillful casualness and musical precision; the lyrics and music were written by the versatile VALEH.

The song was recorded in the summer of this year and produced by Claudio Matta in Berlin. In the video, shot by Sam Mashati, she shows herself in the city of love – Paris. Rocks with a band consisting of guitar and drums VALEH to her song. In the video she meets a man with self-confidence, desire and sensuality.

Conclusion: A real must-list that could appeal to a large target group. A feel-good song that gives you strength and sounds even better every time you listen to it.

Maraskino – “Today is the future” (jhruza records // release September 15, 2023)

“Today is the future – the day after tomorrow will be hard” is the ironic punchline of the party-positive electro-dance trio Maraschino. The casual translation of the Latin bon mots “carpe diem” and “memento mori” already implies an unbridled and extravagant penchant for intoxicating celebrations.
The vocoder and the keynote voice of Nancy Nuclear (Jessica Gaspar) alternate with allegorical allusions to refreshingly cheerful electronic music, which Bernhard Hammer (Electric Guzzi) knows how to breathe a lot of life into the guitar.

Oh alien – “Shining” (Assim Records // VÖ 08.09.2023)

The band’s name suggests being in contact with the unconscious self. Since the discovery of depth psychology, most people have somehow been aware that this unconscious alien in our soul guides our actions. So why not actively intervene in this process? The most effective means of doing this is certainly music. For example in the form of a happy song.
“Shining” is the name of this one, which tries to shut up all mental spoilsports, pessimists and skeptics – i.e. all the voices in the head that have already turned their back on life – in order to create a suitable atmosphere for optimism. The result is a song that conveys a lightness and could therefore also be used well for product placement – without being banal. A song like a life hack. With producer Sixtus Preiss, this experiment was a great success.

RAHEL – “Schaffner” (Ink Music // Release September 8th, 2023)

A slight one is undoubtedly the new star in the indie sky. A more appropriate description would be a party captain around the bridge Rachels new single “Schaffner” to beat important German pop music. It doesn’t matter whether the influences of the old Neue Deutsche Welle come from the Humpe sisters (Ideal/2raumwohnung) twice Judith Holofernes (We are Heroes) are still very clear. The image and sound immediately convey the impression of a character who does not let his texts degenerate into a cultural battle front in order to appear current or relevant. Of course, music has always been and is political. That’s what she is too A slight one. But wrapped in lyrical lines. Who likes to listen to marching songs?
They are simple sentences like “Now do you see how good it is? That you stayed after all.”, which, as if by magic, trigger entire worlds of emotions and refrain from proclaiming a new world with a crowbar. That at A slight one All women pee standing up was clear in a metaphorical sense anyway. But she increasingly gives the impression of being an interesting ally rather than a radical rioter.
