Religion in ethics lessons: How should that work? – Religious Studies Blog

In the 2021/22 school year, ethics lessons were introduced in Austria as an alternative compulsory subject for all students from the ninth grade onwards who do not attend religious classes. According to the curriculum, around a sixth of this subject deals with religion(s) and religion-related topics. In addition, religious studies as a cultural, non-denominational discipline is listed in the curriculum as a reference science for the ethics teaching subject. So far, religious studies components have had little presence in Austrian ethics lessons.
