It is a week placed under the sign of sovereignty: technological sovereignty, decarbonization, but also health sovereignty. This Tuesday, June 12, the President of the Republic visits a laboratory in Ardèche and should make announcements to relocate the production of essential drugs. There is an emergency: according to the Union of Community Pharmacists, nearly 3,000 molecules are missing in France. Our country depends on 60 to 80% of active ingredients made abroad, in particular in China, according to the Élysée.

Admittedly, there is still a long way to go, but things are progressing slowly. The proof: since the Covid crisis, relocations in the pharmaceutical sector, i.e. drugs and biomedicines, have accelerated.

13 pharmaceutical relocations since 2020

The research firm Trendeo has identified thirteen since 2020, within companies which have announced that they are closing a site abroad to repatriate it to France or which subcontracted an activity abroad and which brought it back to France. the hexagon. Over the previous ten years, only one relocation had been recorded. In addition to these relocations, the amount of overall investments in the pharmacy is also increasing, underlines David Cousquer, the founder of Trendeo.

“Over 2009-2019, the pharmacy sector invested 400 million euros per year on average. Since 2020, we have increased to 2.2 billion (on average per year, editor’s note)”. On the other hand, on the employment side, the gains remain marginal.

1,500 net jobs created

Only 1,500 jobs have been created since 2020, while the sector had lost almost 13,000 over the previous ten years. “It’s a somewhat complicated situation, in particular where pharmaceutical groups make cuts in their administrative and head office activities, which shows that there is still a trend towards rationalization”, explains David Cousquer.

As far as health equipment is concerned, France also remains very dependent on foreign countries. “Last year, we imported 3 times more needles and catheters than those we exported”, according to the High Commission for Planning.
