Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) grabbed the first pink jersey of the Giro d’Italia by dominating the opening time trial on Saturday between Fossacesia Marina and Ortona at a pace of 55.2 km/h . “The first mission is accomplished,” smiled the world champion at the organization’s microphone.
Evenepoel is more than a minute ahead of the sprinters and might therefore keep the pink jersey for a few days. But the Belgian has already announced when he intends to give up his leader’s jersey. “We will probably have it until the 4th stage (to Lago Laceno, 1st uphill finish) and then we will try to see if we can give it away. But in the meantime I’m super happy, I want to take advantage, it’s a great way to get back to the Giro,” said Evenepoel, who had only participated in the Tour of Italy once, in 2021.
