The Belgian Remco Evenepoel wins the gold medal in the World Championship time trial in Scotland ahead of Filippo Ganna (ITA) and Joshua Tarling (GBR). (12th) and Stefan Bissegger (17th) did not live up to the high expectations and clearly missed out on the medals.
At the last split, Remco Evenepoel was around 10 seconds ahead of his main rival, Filippo Ganna (ITA). The steep finale up to “Stirling Castle” was launched. The Italian set a clear best time at the finish. However, even before he could take the leader’s throne, Evenepoel crossed the finish line in 55:19 minutes. The Belgian was 12 seconds ahead of Ganna and crowned himself time trial world champion for the first time in his career.
The Swiss Stefan Küng and the defending champion Tobias Foss (NOR) were still on the course at this point, but had long since fallen out of the decision about the medal ranks and could no longer pose a threat to Evenepoel. The only 23-year-old Belgian has already won the most important individual titles in cycling a year after winning the World Championship road race in Wollongong, Australia.
Küng and Bissegger disappoint
On the almost 48 km long and technically less demanding course in and around Stirling, Küng could not keep up with the best drivers. The Swiss, who would have liked more rhythm changes and curves on the track, lost a total of 2:17 minutes to Evenepoel and only finished 12th lost to the best time buried.
Stefan Bissegger fared even worse. The 24-year-old finished 1:55 minutes behind Joshua Tarling (GBR), who was leading at the time. Evenepoel took almost 3 minutes from the Thurgau. Bissegger finally had to settle for 17th place.
Youngster Tarling causes a sensation
Tarling was the big surprise of the race. At the age of just 19, he left big stars of the scene behind with drivers like Wout van Aert (BEL), Tadej Pogacar (SLO) and Geraint Thomas (GBR) and won the bronze medal in a sovereign manner. In June Tarling had secured the British championship title in the time trial.
