Washington. The American actor Alan Arkin, who won an Oscar from the Hollywood Academy for his role in the film “Little Miss Sunshine”, has died at the age of 89, his children confirmed this Friday.
In a statement distributed to local media, his children confirmed that he passed away this week in California.
“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and as a man. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be sorely missed.”
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Arkin got his start in show business with a Broadway play and made his first film debut in 1966 with a role in “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.” for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and also a Golden Globe.
His role in 1968’s “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” earned him another nomination. But it was not until 2006 when he raised the statuette for the film “Little Miss Sunshine”, in which he plays the grandfather of the leading girl, Olive (Abigail Breslin).
He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Performance for the role of Edwin, a World War II veteran kicked out of a nursing home for using and selling heroin.
Arkin published six books, wrote and directed two short films, and starred in the series “100 Center Street.” On television he has also appeared in series such as “Pentagon Papers”, “Escape from Sobibor” or “Chicago Hope”.
He is the father of actors Adam Arkin, Anthony Arkin, and Matthew Arkin.
