Former beach volleyball player and SRF expert Martin Laciga died on Tuesday at the age of 48.
Martin Laciga passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the age of 48. This was announced by Swiss Volley on Friday. “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news. Martin Laciga left his mark as a player, coach, but above all as a great person and made a decisive contribution to the development of beach volleyball,” said CEO Philippe Saxer in a communiqué.
Laciga has suffered from an acute severe depression in recent weeks. “I just wanted to play and have fun. I had no more strength for this fight », Laciga’s last words were quoted.
Impressive palmares
Laciga was considered a pioneer of beach volleyball in Switzerland and was one of the most successful Swiss beach volleyball players. For 18 years he celebrated numerous successes at international level and helped shape his sport.

His list of successes is long: world number 1 and vice world champion in 1999, three-time European champion and three top ten finishes at the Olympic Games. Together with his brother Paul he shaped the scene from 1995 to 2004. Martin Laciga was also successful with his later partners Markus Egger, Jan Schneider and Jefferson Bellaguarda.
Laciga ended his career ten years ago. However, he remained true to the sport. As an SRF expert, he continued to accompany beach volleyball and also traveled to the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2021 in this role.
