A Michigan hen named “Peanut,” who held the Guinness Record for oldest recorded specimen on the planet, died Dec. 25 when she was 21 years old.

Its owner made the announcement in a long publication on her animal blog.

“I am heartbroken to share the news that my Peanut passed away on Christmas morning,” Marsi Parker Darwin wrote in her post.

The animal died in its sleep, in the arms of its owner, reports the New York Post.

Mrs. Darwin, a retired librarian, raised her chicken from birth to the crack of an egg until she died.

“I have so many years of memories with her and it’s something that makes me happy,” she says.

The animal benefited from an active lifestyle that included lots of physical activity as well as a diet that included yogurt with vitamin D in addition to fruits and vegetables.

Peanut received the title of oldest chicken in the world in January 2020, then aged 20.

Since then, its owner has spent a good part of her time highlighting the story of her animal through interviews in the media, in particular.
