Remembering Rachel Yakar: A Renowned Soprano and Influential Teacher in the Baroque Repertoire and Mozart Roles

A specialist in the Baroque repertoire and Mozart roles, Rachel Yakar died on Saturday June 24 at the age of 87. After a fine international career as an opera singer, the Lyon soprano was an emeritus teacher who revealed and supported many current talents.

Born in Lyon in March 1936, Rachel Yakar studied music at the Paris Conservatory and trained with Germaine Lubin before making her debut in 1963 in Strasbourg. Joined the troupe of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf) the following year, the Lyon soprano made an international reputation, particularly in the baroque repertoire.

Also a specialist in the great operatic roles of operas by Mozart, Wagner or Strauss, Rachel Yakar has performed on the greatest stages in Europe and in the most prestigious festivals (Bayreuth, Slazburg, Glyndebourne, etc.), directed by maestros such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Bernard Haitink, Armin Jordan or Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

From 1990, Rachel Yakar converted to teaching opera singing at the Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP), where she notably had Patricia Petibon as a student.

At the same time, the soprano participated in the creation of the lyrical studio of the Baroque Music Center of Versailles, alongside René Jacobs. She has also led many master classes. For several years, Rachel Yakar had retired to the Ile de Ré with her husband, the tenor Michel Lecocq.
