Remembering Steve Joiret: A Devoted Volunteer at Royale Union Hutoise

2023-08-13 13:48:00

Last Saturday, everything was going perfectly at the Royale Union Hutoise, located on the Legrand site in Tihange. The teams were on the pitch for the first time at home since the resumption. A few moments later, a heavy rain falls on the football club. A sign, some would say…

And then, the information falls. Steve Joiret, well known to everyone in these football facilities, was found dead in a field in Verlaine. “His daughter was working at the bar that Saturday, says Florian Rorive, president of the young people. We have therefore decided to take all the necessary measures so that the family can reunite and support each other. Others then took their places behind the bar and also at the fair where we have a stand.”

But what was the involvement of Villersois? At first, he helped in the cafeteria. He then diversified into many areas, but always as a volunteer. Either by giving his time to refresh the infrastructure, which he kept in order with a masterful hand; either by accompanying the club’s flag team as a delegate or as an accompanying person in the youth school.

“He also, a few years ago, breathed new life into our reserve team, emphasizes Florian Rorive. He handled everything from A to Z and we knew we could trust him.” It was with his reserve friends that he created “Les Vintages”, a team that he enrolled in sixths to tread the lawns of our regions in a good-natured setting, but with the desire to even to win everything.

Always there to help

Describing Steve is quite simple: bon vivant, devoted, endearing, hardworking… In short, so many qualities that made him the character he was. With his strong character, it was hardly easy each time but he never ceased to be a person with a heart on his sleeve. Always available to render good and loyal service to anyone, he gave body and soul to those he loved.

If lately he was less present in football, that did not prevent him from coming from time to time to reconnect with the club of Huy where his son, Hugo, plays in U14. While discussing seriously, he never hesitated to joke and was the first to offer a drink.

“If volunteering is not paid, it is not because it is worthless but because it is priceless”: these are the words that come to everyone’s mouth to define the man, with a capital “H”, that Steve represented. Steve was the very definition of a true volunteer. “The entire committee presents its most sincere condolences to his children, Hugo and Manon, but also to his brother, Jérémy and to the whole family. We are with them wholeheartedly in these difficult times”completes the president, moved.
