Tommy “T-Dog” Hughes, 86, of Carson City, Nevada, passed away in his sleep, on September 24, 2023.
Born on June 21, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, Tommy was the son of famed 1930s pop singer Buddy Clark and Louise Hitz, daughter of hotel magnate Ralph Hitz.
Tommy’s passion for helping others led him to serve as a counselor and advisor to the children of Nevada State Children’s Home in Carson City for many years. He was a beloved substitute teacher for Carson City and Dayton schools, where he was affectionately known as T-Dog among his students.
In addition to his dedication to education, Tommy pursued various hobbies throughout his life. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and tennis player. He also had a passion for marathon running and enjoyed collecting antiques and art.
Tommy is survived by his sisters, Angie Hughes Brown of Reno, NV, Suzanne Hughes Creps of Citrus Heights, CA, a brother, William Hughes of SLC, Utah, in addition to several nieces and nephews who he adored.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Paul Hughes of Vancouver, Washington, a sister, Katherine Clark of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and two wives, Delores Schroeder and Maureen Cauley, both of Carson City, NV.
Tommy’s educational journey included graduating from O’Dea High School in Seattle, Washington, in 1956. He later earned his degree from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Although Tommy was a Jesuit Novitiate during his early college years and initially destined for the priesthood, he found comfort in attending all churches and was open to different religious experiences.
At Tommy’s request, no memorial service was planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, C/O Marlo Thomas.
Tommy “T-Dog” Hughes will be remembered for his dedication to children, his love for teaching, and his vibrant personality. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the communities he touched throughout his lifetime.
