Renate Welsh-Rabadi was teased as a “red-headed witch” at school, which she attended when she was five. At that time, the best in her class got the strongest to protect her and paid for his care with stories she wrote herself. Thus began a career that has culminated in many award-winning works for children and adults and continues to this day. The writer, born in 1937, inspired audiences with classics such as “Das Vamperl” and “Johanna” or her autobiographical story “Kieselsteine”. As a leader of writing groups, she has worked with the homeless and people with disabilities, among other things, always aware of the power and healing power of words. When she suffered a stroke in autumn 2021, which robbed her of her words for months, she had to learn a new way of dealing with speechlessness herself. She has now written down this experience in the book “I Without Words” (Czernin), and she talks about it in a conversation with Judith Hoffmann.
