Renault Under Fire: The Truth About Faulty Engines and Class Action Lawsuits

Let’s start with an undeniable truth – Renault, a respected name in the automotive industry, is now under fire from critics. A staggering group of 1,789 disgruntled customers have filed a class action lawsuit against Renault, the French car giant, accusing the company of producing faulty engines.

The problem in question is an overconsumption of oil that has been observed in some cars. This overconsumption can cause engine degradation, resulting in higher maintenance costs and increased pollution. In addition, in some cases, it caused engine failure between 65,000 and 125,000 kilometers.

Overconsumption of Oil: A Major Problem

The dilemma worsened with vehicles fitted with 1.2 TCe petrol engines, produced by Renault between October 2012 and June 2016. These engines were installed not only in the Renault range – including the Clio, Mégane, Kangoo – but also in Dacia models, the Mercedes Citan and some Nissan vehicles equipped with the 1.2 DIG-T engine. In France, approximately 133,000 vehicles have been fitted with this type of engine, which has amplified the scale of the problem.

However, this is not the first time this issue has been reported. The consumer association UFC-Que Choisir had already issued the alert in 2019 on these engines. She raised the possibility that up to 400,000 vehicles in France could be affected, and other cases have been reported elsewhere in Europe.

The Hour of Justice for Renault?

The complaint, filed at the Nanterre Criminal Court, is full of accusations. The stated reasons are “aggravated deception, deceptive commercial practices, fraud, destruction, degradation and damage dangerous to people”, and “endangering the lives of others”. It is clear that these allegations put Renault in a difficult position, and the respected brand will have a lot to do to regain the trust of its customers.
